HOTELS

London has a plethora of exquisite hotels to choose from, there is much to see and do in this city whether you're a local looking for a decadent staycation or have traveled from abroad. Here are some of our favourite places to rest your head when you arrive.

The Peninsula - Belgravia

A hotel group that needs no introduction, the Peninsula prides itself on tradition, innovation and absolute perfection - and hits the mark every time. With signature service, low key decadence and state of the art in-room tech, they offer a range of unique excursions to make your visit truly special. You will feel right at home at any of their global sister properties, in London we are big fans of Canton Blue - a fusion restaurant celebrating Cantonese and British cuisine, and their Ricari Studios spa treatments.

St. Ermin's Hotel - Westminster

Hidden away behind a tree-lined courtyard, just a stones throw from the houses of parliament and Buckingham Palace, St. Ermin’s is right in the heart of the Westminster Bubble. Originally opening its doors in 1899, the hotel was the setting of many exciting moments in Britain's history, including the founding meeting of the Special Operations Executive - Churchill's secret army, which occupied an entire floor of the hotel during WWII. You can visit beehives on the roof terrace, sample their very own honey and small batch Gin and sip champagne at the Caxton Bar, a place Churchill frequented and let history envelop your imagination. If you're looking to be surrounded by architectural excellence, historic artefacts and whispers of clandestine meetings past (some even involving treacherous double agents) this little oasis is the perfect place for an intimate rendezvous; your own clandestine escape.

Treehouse Hotel - Marylebone

Artsy mid-century chic meets contemporary quirkiness at this cozy sustainable hotel in the sky. Our editor Lena loves this boutique chain for it's inviting decor and welcoming atmosphere. Savour organic Cali-Mex cuisine at Madera whilst overlooking panoramic views of the city. Where this hotel truly shines is with their fun and eclectic offerings, which include; curated packages for the kiddos, staycations with your favorite furry friend and they even partner with Bloomsbury Publishing to deliver handcrafted cocktails and a curated selection of Fantasy novels straight to your room.

Prince Akatoke - Marylebone

A Japanese inspired retreat, just a stone's throw from Hyde Park and the bustling hum of Oxford Circus. Set in the chic village neighborhood of Marylebone, yet removed from the city's metropolitan energy, this hotel perfectly situates you for a stroll through some of London's chicest neighborhoods - from Marylebone and Mayfair to Carnaby St. discovering the best shopping in the city on foot. When you return from your day of exploration, The Akatoke will have furnished your room with a Yukata, Yoga mat; everything you need for a truly tranquil evening. Wind down for bed with a traditional tea set and signature Akatoki pillow spray supporting you in creating a serene atmosphere of tranquility to restore you after a day of excitement. And be sure to check out The Wallace Collection, it's just around the corner.

CUISINE

One of the best ways to get to know a city's culture is through it's extraordinary restaurants. Here are some of our favourite places in London, showcasing the best cuisine our diverse city has to offer.

St. John - a London institution with multiple locations

Holding a Michelin Star since 2009, St. John's pioneering philosophy is nose-to-tail eating. Their menu is refreshing, rediscovering the best of traditional British cuisine, always driven by the seasons and sourcing the best local ingredients. St. John boasts a varied selection of in-house produced signature wines from their winery 'Boulevard Napoléoni' in the heart of Minervois, South West France. We find the Claret, with hints of blackberry and graphite to be especially indulgent. It is, of course, their best seller.

Photo courtesy of Bob Bob Ricard

Bob Bob Ricard - Soho

Ring the bell for more Champagne! At this iconic Soho haunt, which offers a signature menu of British & French elevated classics, every booth is equipped with a "Press for Champagne" bell so you can keep the bubbles flowing as you are transported back in time. The decadent decor designed by David Collins takes inspiration from The Golden Age of Travel and the Orient Express. The blini's are fluffy, the Amurski divine, and they make a solid Waldorf salad.

Kol - Marylebone

The Magic of Chef Santiago Lastra is fully realised in Kol, a Michelin Starred oasis where Mexican fare merges with local British ingredients for a truly majestic dining experience. Their ever-evolving tasting menus are truly an adventure for the senses, accommodating meat lovers, pescetarians and vegans alike. We are totally obsessed with their signature cocktails!

Chisou - Mayfair

Tucked away in a small corner of bustling Mayfair, Chisou's vibrant atmosphere immediately transports you to Japan. Authentic, traditional fresh fare and seasonal, contemporary specials delight the palate. The Omotenashi approach of serving guests with warmth, anticipation and selflessness is the heart of Japanese hospitality, and Chisou's unique way of making you feel at home creates an inviting setting - intimate enough for a romantic evening yet casual enough for a business lunch or family meal. P. S. They even make their own sake!

Anglothai - Marylebone

Anglothai boasts a Michelin star for its inspiring celebration of Thai flavours utilizing the best of British produce, fish and game. The marrying of cultures on the plate through innovative techniques and daring combinations of both flavour and texture is phenomenal. An ever-changing tasting menu caters for omnivores as well as vegans and pescatarians, and is accompanied by an expertly-curated wine list. If you pop in for lunch we definitely recommend adding the Brixham Crab, Exmoor Caviar & Coconut Ash Cracker course, it's beautiful. This revolutionary new restaurant is not to be missed.

Lina Stores - Marylebone + Brewer St. Locations

Since 1944 this delicatessen has been the leading purveyor of Italian fine foods, bringing Italy's rich culinary heritage to Londoners. Fresh pasta, handmade in-house (even for gluten-free pasta lovers) and the Tagliolini al Tartufo is stunning. Their exquisite knowledge of provenance shines through authentic antipasti, and a seasonal menu of secundi and dolci. One patron describes Lina Stores as the 'food library of Italy' and we couldn't agree more… and if you happen to be in Japan, check out Lina Stores Omotesando in Tokyo.

Darjeeling Express - Soho

Nestled atop Kingly Court on London's iconic Carnaby Street, you will discover the passion of a woman that needs no introduction. Chef and activist Asma Khan's revolutionary all-female kitchen will transport your taste buds through the maternal heritage of Indian cuisine. Her complex yet approachable dishes offer the finest taste of traditional Indian comfort food, and her signature Dhal literally made our founder tear up with joy. It is as if you are experiencing India itself in every bite. Truly majestic.

ARTS & CULTURE

Every city has a distinctive pulse, which one can only experience through it's art and culture fare. This is A & C done the Viatrix way.

The Royal Court - Sloane Square

The Royal Court has been the home of contemporary British theatre since 1956, becoming known for "kitchen sink drama" pioneered by John Osborne and Arnold Wesker. This trailblazing playhouse continues to offer the best of new writing with a global voice, featuring playwrights from around the world whose works examine cultural, political and societal topics.

Curzon - Mayfair

A cinefile's delight, and by far our founder's favorite cinema in London. This 1960's architectural marvel will transport you to another dimension. The picturehouse uniquely features a doorless auditorium and stunning fiberglass murals sculpted by William Mitchell which afford a unique, bass-relieving, acoustic experience. The coffered, geometric, modernist ceiling, dramatic curtain and experimental lighting set the mood. Snuggle into your blue velvet seat with a glass of wine, yummy popcorn and retro candy. Screening everything from Indy gems and Curzon Classics, to Hollywood Blockbusters.

The Private Life of Helen of Troy - First National Pictures (1927)

Kennington Bioscope - Kennington

This cinema museum is Kennington's best kept secret… This eclectic haunt was a former workhouse where Charlie Chaplin was sent as a child. The Bioscope describes itself as a host to silent film screenings, theatrical extravaganzas, film clubs, live talks and more. Our recommendation for an off the beaten path first date or for anyone that desires a truly unique night out. Enjoy a shandy and a silent film accompanied by a live pianist. Pure movie magic!

WINE BARS

Fullbodied reds, conversations by candlelight, there is nothing quite like the unique setting of a great winebar. Here are our favorite haunts.

Photo courtesy of Lady of the Grapes

Lady of the Grapes - Covent Garden

With a warm and intimate vibe, this organic wine bar and restaurant is the perfect place for a candlelit rendezvous, or a night out planning your next adventure with your favorite co-conspirator. With a focus on sustainable wines from female winemakers and a delightful array of small bites, it is truly a jewel in Covent Garden.

Gordon's Wine Bar - Embankment

Deep and decadent, London's oldest wine bar dates back to the 1890's. Sip exquisite vintages by candlelight in the subterranean caves beneath the hum of the bustling city above. Such a treat drinking sherries and ports served right from the barrel.

COFFEE

Tamp Coffee - Chiswick

This trendy coffee shop injects vibrant South American culture into West London. Enjoy a full bodied roast with a pastel de nata or an indulgent, buttery empanada. On beautiful summer nights you can enjoy your flat white and acai bowl while listening to live bossanova music.

Nikora - Mayfair

Delightful, elegant, straightforward. This independent coffee shop caught our eye last year and we keep going back. There is something about their cozy, tranquil spaces inviting us to slow down and be in the moment with a great cup of Joe. Multiple locations throughout London.

TREATS

One woman's eclair is another's Latour. For whatever fills you with delight and wonder, we have curated an eclectic list of our favorite treats to discover throughout the city.

Postcard Teas - Mayfair

This little gem of a tea shop in Mayfair focuses on high quality, hand picked teas from small, sustainable farms around the world. Every tea is a luxury and the packaging features a postcard inspired and sourced from the region where the tea is harvested. They even offer a tea school every Saturday with a global tea travelling specialist. Stop by for a tasting - you won't be disappointed.

Photo courtesy of Beverley Hills Bakery

Beverley Hills Bakery - London

This beloved woman-owned bakery, established in 1990 by head pastry chef Rosa de Souza, is old school decadence done to perfection. How to summarise a woman (or cakes) of this calibre: Chef Rosa, from her inspiring origins as a young migrant and refugee displaced by political turmoil to a pastry chef for the royal family of Denmark. She then garnered recognition as a high-quality patisserie partner, supplying London's luxury department stores (Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Fortnum & Mason) before founding B.H.B. Their cheesecake is gorgeous - the best we've had outside NYC - and though they are only accessible through online order, they offer a speedy and exceptional delivery service. P.S. They offer international shipping; serving London, U.K. Europe and N. America.

So French Café & Épicerie - Marylebone

Our favorite French épicurean pantry and patisserie has the best canelés in London…need we say more? Pop in for a delicious eclair and a café au lait and explore shelves full of decadent products from French artisans.

Raya - Borough Market, Southwark

Raya is the premiere purveyor of South East Asian produce, situated within the vibrant and international stalls of Borough Market. We are obsessed with their sugarcane juice - freshly squeezed daily right in front of you, homemade curry pastes, and the Durian on display.

Matchado - Chiswick

We are huge fans of Matchado and with 4 locations across London, you won't be hard pressed to get that matcha fix. Simply the most delightfully authentic Japanese matcha green tea and matcha-infused treats, using the finest quality ingredients. Their gluten-free matcha brownies may be one of the best things we have ever tried and they even sell the mix to bake at home - dangerously delicious.

FARM SHOP - Mayfair

Farm Shop is just that, your local farm shop. A bit of Somerset in the city…in the heart of Mayfair of course. You will find an array of unique, curated pantry items, such as Wagyu drippings and pink grapefruit marmalade. They have an absolutely gorgeous cheese selection, delicious pastries, British made gifts and offer an international array of curated wines. They boast a sustainable full-carcass butchery, make wine from their own vineyard, and even blend and bottle their own 'Negroni' recipe. Farm to table treats in a welcoming neighbourhood haunt.

Hedonism Wines - Mayfair

From old world vintages to new world discoveries Hedonism has it all…and if they don't, they will find it for you. The store's beautiful ambiance welcomes with a unique light installation; individually lit wine glasses festoon the ceiling, spanning 15 meters. The fairy light illuminates rows of craftsman oak wine racks, presenting an amazing selection of both rare and approachable wines. Another highlight is their Enomatic sampling machines, featuring rotating vintages of world renowned icons such as Haut-Brion, Mouton-Rothschild, Sassicaia, D'Yquem, Latour and Sine Qua Non, offering you the opportunity to taste a range of as many as thirty different wines. With expert knowledge supported by exceptional service it is our go-to for wines and spirits alike, whether you are looking for a beautiful Junmai Daiginjo, a single cask from the Highlands of Scotland or a yummy Super Tuscan.

Sautter - Mayfair

For 50 years, this Mount St. institution has held a global reputation in the world of cigars. Specialising in vintage and aged Cubans, New World's and cigar accoutrement. We love walking into such an inviting atmosphere; the expertise and friendly fellows lounging and conversing over a cigar transport you straight to Havana. If you are a cigar connoisseur in the market for authenticity, this family owned and operated establishment will make you feel right at home. Our founder's go-to for her annual birthday Cohiba, what a treat to have a taste of Cuba in our back yard.

Part of the Portobello market scene and adored amongst locals, this cozy city nook, part bookshop, part cafe, part kitchen laboratory, was founded in 1983 and has garnered the reputation of "the best smelling shop in the world." Word on the street is to get there by 11 am if you want a table.

Originally specializing in books for travellers. Daunt Books is our go-to for their extensive collection of books about the world. Housed in a former Edwardian bookshop, with stained glass windows, oak galleries, william morris wallpaper and expansive skylights, a highlight for us is their arrangement of travel literature. This features sections categorized geographically, with travel writing, guides and phrasebooks, history and fiction organized by their relevant country of origin.
